About the event

We often encounter two extreme rhetorical poles regarding global migration: the exclusionary fear that outsiders will fundamentally break a nation’s institutions, and the assimilationist demand that imported cultures must be entirely erased for a society to function. This dialogue strips away the emotional rhetoric to examine the cold mechanics of demographic shifts, cultural transmission, and economic outcomes.

Join us for an inquiry-based Socratic discussion where we will analyze the data and sociological models driving these intense societal debates.

Core Topics of Inquiry:

• The Culture Transplant: Drawing from economist Garett Jones, we will explore the theory of "institutional carryover." Do migrants inevitably import the political and economic attitudes of their homelands, slowly shifting host institutions to mirror the ones they left behind?

• The Mathematics of Assimilation: We will unpack William Meijer's purely statistical definition of integration—the idea that assimilation only occurs when the cultural traits of migrants perfectly align with the mean, standard deviation, and skewness of the native population. Can human integration actually be reduced to a bell curve?

• The Protectionism Paradox: We will examine the root of nationalist anxieties to determine if the fear of imported norms is grounded in empirical reality or a misinterpretation of societal evolution.

• The "Migrant Capital" Counter-Variable: How does the extreme risk-tolerance required to uproot one's life alter a diaspora? Do migrants simply recreate the world they left behind, or does their shared risk appetite forge an entirely new, hybrid economic engine?

Come prepared to challenge your own assumptions, dissect the economic literature, and explore the mechanisms of how cultures actually collide and integrate.
